Instructional Videos

There are a lot of wonderful instructional videos for kayaking out there. To be honest there are also some not-so-great videos out there.

We’ve tried to compile a list here of some of our favourite tried-and-true videos.

If you have a suggestion for a great video that is missing please let us know

Paddling Skills

Paddling Skills for Beginners

This great little video by our sister school Deep Cove Kayak is a great overview of the difference between a forward stroke and a sweep stroke (to help your kayak turn).

Re-Entry Skills

Assisted Re-entry – Heel hook

This video has lots of little tricks on how to successfully do an assisted re-entry. The heel hook version has become very popular in recent years as it requires less upper body strength from the paddler re-entering the kayak.
Watching this video does not replace proper instruction or practice. Please make sure you practice your re-entry on a regular basis in challenging conditions before going paddling on your own.

Paddle float solo re-entry

This video is a great review on how to do a re-entry with a paddle float. Watching this video does not replace proper instruction or practice. Please make sure you practice your re-entry on a regular basis in challenging conditions before going paddling on your own.

Scoop Rescue for injured paddlers

This is a great way to get an injured paddler back into the boat. It also works well if somebody doesn’t have the strength to get on the back deck of the boat for a traditional assisted re-entry.

Empty a flooded hatch with Cleopatra’s needle

We’re not proud to admit it, but it certainly has happened to us that we forgot to properly close our hatch and suddenly we have a flooded hatch and a kayak that can barely stay afloat. This video shows you how to empty a flooded hatch.
